When I joined the Girlguides it was mainly so that I would be giving back to the community. I didn’t think about how much I would learn as a result.
I have talked about my First Aid training and a couple of weekends ago I did a whole day’s training in talking to the media.
In a previous job working in a PR agency I had been involved in delivering media training, so it was really useful to be on the other side.
We talked a lot about the Girlguiding key messages and how we could give personal examples of this. The messages are:
- We are for all girls
- We give girls their own space
- We give girls a voice
- We change as the lives of girls change
and even within the short time of being involved I had a lot to say about each of them! They are an excellent example of key messaging, really relevant to the organisation and they were directly chosen as a result of consultation with the members, which I guess is why we are able to relate to them.
I feel confident now in talking to all types of the media, including broadcast and I cannot wait until I am called on to be a spokesperson for Girlguiding.
If you would like to be involved, either as an adult volunteer, or a young person who wants to join visit the main site here, or my group here.
